Create a size chart for your clothing brand

A clear chart answers the question most shoppers ask before buying apparel: “Will this fit me?” Use the PNG on Shopify, Etsy and Amazon listings, paste the HTML into your product pages, send it to customers who ask about fit, add it to wholesale line sheets, or post it with a new drop on social.

How to make a clothing size chart

  • Choose the garment. The template adds the usual measurement rows and size columns, with example numbers to replace.
  • Pick garment or body measurements and inches or centimeters.
  • Replace the template values with measurements from your own samples. Add, rename or remove sizes and rows as needed.
  • Add your brand, product and fit, then download a PNG, PDF or CSV, or copy the table.

Body measurements vs garment measurements

Body measurements describe the person: their chest, waist and hips. Garment measurements describe the item itself, usually laid flat: chest width from armpit to armpit, length from the shoulder to the hem. A size M tee might fit a 38 to 40″ chest (body) but measure 20″ across (garment). Mixing the two is one of the most common causes of fit-related returns, so label your chart clearly.

US vs UK vs EU clothing sizes

Women's numeric sizes differ the most: on common retail charts a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40. Men's casual tops are usually sold by letter size, jeans by waist inches, and tailored jackets and trousers by numbered sizes that differ between the US/UK and EU. Kidswear is labeled by age in the US and UK and by height in centimeters across much of Europe, and height is the more reliable guide. Each brand sets its own measurements, so conversions are a starting point, not a guarantee.

Size charts for T-shirts, hoodies & streetwear

For tees and hoodies, chest width, body length and sleeve length cover most questions. If your style is boxy or oversized, say so in the fit field and in the note, since streetwear shoppers often size down for a regular fit. Keep one chart per blank or cut; a heavyweight boxy tee and a slim tee shouldn't share numbers. Once your sizes are set, consistent woven size labels or printed heat transfers help customers find the size inside the garment.

How to measure clothing correctly

  • Lay the garment flat and smooth, without stretching it.
  • Chest: straight across, 1″ (2.5 cm) below the armholes.
  • Length: from the highest point of the shoulder down to the hem.
  • Sleeve: from the shoulder seam to the cuff, or from the center back for raglan and drop-shoulder styles.
  • Pants: waist across the top edge, inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.

Common size chart mistakes

  • Mixing body and garment measurements without saying which is which.
  • Leaving off the unit, so shoppers guess between inches and centimeters.
  • Copying another brand's chart instead of measuring your own samples.
  • Measuring sizes at different points, which makes the grading look uneven.
  • Not explaining slim or oversized fits.
  • Assuming one size system works in every market.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a clothing size chart?

Measure one finished sample in every size the same way, pick the measurements shoppers need (for a T-shirt: chest width, body length and sleeve), and enter them in a table with one column per size. Say whether they're garment or body measurements and which unit you used.

How do I convert US clothing sizes to UK sizes?

On common retail charts, a women's US 8 is a UK 12, and men's tailored chest and waist sizes use the same number in both. It's a guide, not a rule. Use the converter above, then check the brand's own measurements.

Are US and UK clothing sizes the same?

Not for women's numeric sizes: UK numbers are usually higher (US 8 ≈ UK 12). Men's tailoring numbers and letter sizes are often shared, but the actual fit still varies by brand.

How do EU clothing sizes compare with US sizes?

On common retail charts a women's US 8 is about an EU 40, and a men's tailored US/UK 40 jacket is about an EU 50. Casual tops and jeans usually use letter sizes or waist inches everywhere, so compare measurements instead.

How do I add a size chart to Shopify or Etsy?

On Shopify, use Copy HTML and paste the table into the product description's HTML view, or upload the PNG. Etsy listings don't accept HTML tables, so add the PNG as one of your listing photos and mention key measurements in the description.

Should a size chart use body or garment measurements?

Either works if you're clear about which one you use. Garment measurements help shoppers compare with clothes they already own; body measurements suit fitted pieces like dresses. Don't mix the two in one chart without labeling it.

What measurements go in a T-shirt or hoodie size chart?

Most brands show chest width (pit to pit), body length (high point of the shoulder to hem) and sleeve length. Hoodies often measure the sleeve from the center back. Oversized styles should say so, because the numbers will run larger.

Are clothing sizes standardized?

No. Most brands set their own measurements, so the same label can fit differently from one brand to the next. That's why a clear chart for each product matters.

How do I convert inches to centimeters for a size chart?

Multiply inches by 2.54. The tool does this for you: switch between inches and centimeters and every value converts, rounded to the nearest half centimeter or quarter inch.
