Know before you order

How Patch Sizing and Embroidery Sizing Differ

Two different production methods, two different sets of limits.

Patches

A patch is made on its own backing, so detail holds better at small sizes and the only real limit is the space it is applied to. Border style and backing choice matter more than fabric.

Direct Embroidery

Stitching goes into the garment, so seams, cap crown height, pocket edges, and stretch all cap the usable area. Wide and short layouts almost always outperform tall ones on caps.

Small Text

Lettering needs physical height to stay readable. If your text is tiny at the size you picked, we flag it in mockup review and suggest an adjustment rather than stitching it blind.

Proportions

Both advisors keep your artwork's true aspect ratio. A wide logo stays wide, a tall crest stays tall, and nothing gets squeezed to force a fit.

FAQ

Patch and Embroidery Sizing Questions

The questions our team answers most often before a first order.

What size patch should I order?

A practical starting range is about 3 to 4 inches wide for a left chest, around 2 to 2.5 inches tall for cap fronts, and 10 to 12 inches wide for jacket backs. Use the Patch Type Advisor and it will size your own artwork to the placement you choose instead of guessing from averages.

How do I measure a patch?

Measure the widest point across and the tallest point up and down, in inches. Odd shapes are measured by the rectangle that fully contains them, so a shield or a banner is priced by its overall width and height.

Is embroidery sized the same way as a patch?

No. A patch is a separate piece applied to the item, so it only needs to fit the space. Direct embroidery is stitched into the garment itself, so the seams, crown height, pocket edges, and fabric stretch all limit the usable area. That is why the two charts on this page are separate.

Are these sizes final?

They are approximate starting points. Once we see your artwork, our team fine-tunes the final width and height during the mockup process so lettering stays readable and the layout stays balanced. Nothing goes into production before you approve it.

What if my design does not fit the placement I want?

We will tell you during mockup review and suggest either a slightly different size or a simplified layout. Very small text and hairline details are the most common reason a design needs adjusting.
