Which Custom Patch Is Right for Your Design?

The construction you pick changes how much detail survives, how the patch feels and how it holds up. Here is the short version.

Embroidered patches

Your design is bold and graphic and you want real stitched texture people can feel. The most versatile choice for hats, jackets, workwear and everyday apparel.

Woven patches

Your logo has thin lines, tight details or smaller lettering that thicker embroidery stitches would blur. The weave is flatter and holds finer detail.

PVC patches

The patch lives outdoors or on gear that gets wet, dirty or scuffed. Molded rubber is waterproof, wipes clean and keeps crisp color separation.

Glow-in-the-dark PVC patches

You want the durability of PVC with elements that stay visible in low light after they have been exposed to light.

Chenille patches

Big letters, monograms or mascots on varsity jackets and team apparel, where plush height and scale matter more than fine detail.

Leather patches

You want a minimal, premium mark on hats, bags or heritage-style apparel rather than a full-color graphic.

Printed / sublimated patches

Your artwork has gradients, photographic detail or more colors than thread can reproduce cleanly.

Still torn between two? Compare embroidered vs PVC patches or woven vs embroidered patches.

You get a full-color digital mockup within 24 hours. Ask for changes until it looks right.

  4. Step 4

    Approve, then we produce

You approve the digital mockup before paying, then a photo of your real sample. Standard turnaround is 10 to 14 business days after sample approval.

How Big Should Your Custom Patch Be?

There is no single right size. It depends on where the patch goes, how your artwork is proportioned, how much text and fine detail it carries, the garment itself and how much presence you want it to have.

A hat front has a limited usable area, a left chest patch usually reads best when it stays modest, sleeves are narrow, a jacket back can carry a full statement piece and bags fall somewhere in between. Text-heavy artwork almost always needs to go bigger than people expect so the lettering stays clean.

We size to your artwork's own proportions instead of stretching or cropping it, and we confirm the final size with you on your mockup.

Choose Your Backing

Backing is chosen separately from patch type, so it comes down to how the patch will be attached and used.

Sew-on

The most durable, permanent option. Best for jackets, workwear and anything that gets washed often.

Iron-on

Quick heat-activated attachment for suitable fabrics. Many customers iron it on and add a few stitches for extra hold.

Hook-and-loop

For patches you want to remove or swap between garments, bags and gear.

Not Sure Which Patch Type or Size You Need?

Upload your artwork and answer a couple of quick questions. The Patch Advisor recommends a patch type and a proportional Width by Height based on your design and where it will be worn. It is free, no account is needed, and you can adjust anything before you request a mockup.

Custom Patch FAQs

What patch type is best for my artwork?

It depends on detail and use. Bold graphics suit embroidery, fine lines and small lettering suit woven, outdoor and gear use suits PVC, large letters suit chenille, and gradients or photographic artwork suit printed patches. Upload your file to the Patch Advisor and it will recommend a type based on your design, placement and intended use.

What size patch should I order?

Size follows the placement and your artwork's own proportions. Hat fronts, left chest, sleeves, jacket backs and bags all have different usable areas, so we recommend a Width by Height that fits the space without stretching or cropping your design. The Patch Advisor and our size charts show typical ranges for each placement.

Which patch works best for small text?

Woven patches hold the smallest legible lettering because the weave is flatter and finer than embroidery stitches. Printed patches also reproduce small text well. If the design must be embroidered, we will flag any lettering that needs to grow before production and show it on your mockup.

What backing should I choose?

Sew-on is the most durable and permanent. Iron-on is a quick heat-activated attachment for suitable fabrics and can also be sewn for extra security. Hook-and-loop is best when the patch needs to be removed or swapped. Tell us what the patch is going on and we will recommend the backing with your mockup.

Can I review the design before production?

Yes. You receive a full-color digital mockup within 24 hours, and nothing goes into production until you approve it. There is no payment before your approval.

What is the minimum order?

Embroidered, Woven, PVC, Glow-in-the-Dark PVC, Chenille, Leather, and Printed / Sublimated patches start at 5 pieces. Your recommended patch type will show its correct minimum.

How long does the process take?

You get your mockup within 24 hours. After you approve it, standard production runs 10 to 14 business days, and rush options are available on request.

Can you work from a logo, sketch or reference?

Yes. Send a logo file, a photo of a sketch or a reference image, or just describe your idea. Our team redraws and prepares the artwork for production and shows you the result on your mockup before anything is made.
