What hook-and-loop backing is

Hook-and-loop is a two-part fastener. One face is covered in tiny stiff hooks, the other in soft loops; pressed together they hold, and pulled apart they release without damage. On a patch, the hook face is sewn to the back. The loop face is the panel already fitted to most packs, carriers, caps and some uniforms.

How it works in practice

1. Hook on the patch

We stitch the hook side to the back of your finished patch during production.

2. Loop on the gear

Your bag, carrier or cap supplies the loop panel. If it has none, a loop piece can be sewn on once.

3. Press and go

Line it up, press it down. It comes off cleanly when you want to change it.

Available on every construction

Embroidered

The most common hook-and-loop patch. Thread texture with the hook side stitched to the back.

Embroidered patches

PVC

Rubber front, hook backing. Wipes clean and handles weather better than thread.

PVC patches

Woven

Thin and flat, so it sits closer to the panel. Best for fine text and name strips.

Woven patches

Glow PVC

Glow front with hook backing for night-visible marker patches.

Glow PVC patches

Where it is used

Tactical gear

Panels on packs and carriers are already loop-faced, so the patch just presses on.

Bags and backpacks

Change the mark without altering the bag.

Hats and caps

Caps with a loop field on the front take a 2 to 2.5 inch patch.

Uniforms

Name and role patches that move between shifts or garments.

Jackets

Seasonal or event patches you take off before washing.

Team gear

One shared loop panel, many interchangeable team marks.

Tactical patches · morale patches · uniform patches

Removable and interchangeable

The practical advantage is that the patch is not committed to one garment. One loop panel can carry a different patch each day, and patches come off before washing, which extends the life of both the patch and the garment. The trade-off is that hook-and-loop holds less firmly than stitching under heavy pull or sustained wind, so anything on a riding vest or a hard-wearing work jacket is better sewn.

Hook-and-loop questions

Is hook-and-loop the same as Velcro?

People use the word interchangeably, but VELCRO® is a brand name. What we supply is generic hook-and-loop backing, which functions the same way. We do not represent it as branded VELCRO® product.

Which side comes on the patch?

The hook side is sewn to the back of the patch. That is the side that grips, and it matches the loop panels already fitted to most bags, carriers and caps. If you need the loop side instead, say so on your order and we will note it.

Can I use it on bags?

Yes, as long as the bag has a loop panel. If it does not, a separate loop piece can be sewn to the bag first, or you can choose sew-on backing instead.

Is it available on PVC patches?

Yes. Hook-and-loop is available on every construction we make — embroidered, PVC, glow PVC, woven, printed and chenille.

How much does hook-and-loop backing cost?

Hook-and-loop adds $0.30 per patch. Sew-on, iron-on and adhesive backing carry no extra charge. The surcharge is applied automatically in the calculator with the rest of your order.

Can I order 5 patches?

Every custom patch type starts at 5 pieces: embroidered, woven, printed, chenille, leather, PVC and glow-in-the-dark PVC. Larger quantities simply lower your per-piece price.
