What Are Custom PVC Patches?

A custom PVC patch is molded rather than stitched. Your artwork is built as a mold, then soft, flexible PVC (the rubber-style material you have seen on tactical and outdoor gear) is formed into that shape. The result is a patch with visible depth, clean edges and colors that stay separated instead of blending into each other.

Because the material is waterproof and flexible, PVC bends with a bag strap or a jacket sleeve, wipes clean after a rough day, and holds its shape and color. That combination is why brands, clubs and crews reach for PVC when the patch lives on gear rather than on a dress shirt.

Every PVC order starts from your own file. Upload a logo, a sketch or a reference, and we prepare it for molding and send back a full-color mockup within 24 hours. Nothing gets made until you approve it.

PVC at a glance

  • Molded 2D or layered 3D detail
  • Waterproof and flexible
  • Sharp color separation, no fraying edges
  • Custom shapes and custom colors
  • Sew-on, iron-on / heat-seal or hook-and-loop backing
  • Minimum order: 25 pieces

2D vs 3D PVC Patches

Both are available on every custom PVC order. The difference is how many levels your artwork sits on.

2D PVC

One flat level, with molded borders separating each color. It reads clean and graphic, and it is the safer choice for logos with lots of small elements or tight lettering, since nothing is competing for height.

3D PVC

Raised and recessed levels give parts of the design real height, so faces, animals, emblems and layered logos gain shadow and dimension. Best when your artwork has a clear foreground and background to separate.

When PVC Makes More Sense Than Embroidery

Outdoor and tactical gear

Packs, plate carriers, shells and anything that gets wet, dusty or scuffed.

Bags and backpacks

A flexible patch that survives straps, buckles and daily abuse.

Hats

Molded depth reads well on a cap front without the fuzz of thread over time.

Workwear and uniforms

Wipes clean instead of holding grease, dirt and grime in the stitching.

Morale-style patches

The classic look for unit, crew and community patches, usually hook-and-loop.

Bold logos and clean shapes

Strong graphic marks with defined color areas mold beautifully.

If the patch is going on everyday apparel and you want stitched texture people can feel, embroidered patches are the more natural fit. Our embroidered vs PVC comparison walks through both side by side, and the full custom patches lineup covers every other option.

How Much Detail Works on PVC?

PVC is molded, so each element needs a little breathing room to hold its shape. Bold shapes, defined color blocks and confident lettering translate extremely well. Hairline strokes, very small text and fine gradient-style shading are where designs get tight.

That does not mean detailed logos are out. It usually means the patch needs a slightly larger size, or a small simplification, so every element stays readable at arm's length. Our team reviews your file, adjusts what needs adjusting, and shows you the result before anything is produced.

If your artwork has a lot of small text or intricate line work, woven patches may hold it more comfortably. Not sure which way to go? The Patch Advisor looks at your uploaded design and recommends a patch type and a proportional size.

PVC Patch Size and Placement

There is no single correct PVC size. It comes from two things: where the patch goes, and how your artwork is proportioned. A cap front has a narrow usable panel, a cap side is smaller still, a left chest patch reads best when it stays modest, sleeves are narrow, bags sit in the middle and a jacket back can carry a full statement piece.

We size to your artwork's own proportions rather than stretching or cropping it, then confirm the final Width by Height with you on your mockup.

Backing Options for PVC Patches

Backing is a separate choice from the patch itself, so pick it based on how the patch gets attached and whether it ever needs to come off.

Sew-on

Permanent and the most secure. Best for jackets, vests and anything washed often.

Iron-on / heat seal

Quick heat-activated attachment for suitable fabrics. Many customers add a few stitches for extra hold.

Hook-and-loop

Removable and swappable. The standard for morale patches, packs and gear.

Custom PVC Patch FAQs

Are PVC patches waterproof?

Yes. PVC patches are molded from a waterproof, flexible material, so rain, sweat and washing do not soak into the patch. The surface also wipes clean, which is why PVC is a common pick for outdoor gear and workwear.

Can PVC patches go on hats?

Yes. PVC works on hat fronts and hat sides as long as the size fits the usable panel area. Cap fronts are limited, so we size the patch to your artwork's own proportions and confirm the final Width by Height with you on the mockup.

Can I use hook-and-loop backing on a PVC patch?

Yes. Hook-and-loop is available alongside sew-on and iron-on / heat-seal backing. Choose hook-and-loop when the patch needs to come off or move between jackets, plate carriers, bags and gear.

Are PVC patches better than embroidered patches?

Neither is better overall, they suit different jobs. PVC is the stronger choice for outdoor gear, wet or dirty conditions and clean graphic shapes with sharp color separation. Embroidery is the stronger choice when you want stitched thread texture on everyday apparel. Our embroidered vs PVC guide compares them side by side.

Will small text work on a PVC patch?

Small text can work, but it depends on how small it is next to the overall patch size. Molded detail needs a little room around each element to stay readable. Send your file and we will flag anything that needs to grow, then show you exactly how it reads on your mockup before production.

Can my PVC patch be 2D or 3D?

Both. 2D keeps the design on a single flat level with color separated by molded borders. 3D layers raised and recessed levels so parts of the artwork sit higher than others. Tell us which look you want, or ask for our recommendation with your mockup.

What size should my PVC patch be?

Size follows placement and your artwork's proportions. Hat fronts, left chest, sleeves, bags and jacket backs all have different usable areas. The Patch Advisor recommends a proportional Width by Height from your uploaded artwork, and our size chart shows typical ranges by placement.

Can I see my PVC patch design before production?

Yes. You get a full-color digital mockup within 24 hours, and nothing is produced until you approve it. There is no payment before your approval.

What is the minimum order?

Embroidered and Printed / Sublimated patches start at 10 pieces. Woven, PVC, Glow-in-the-Dark PVC, Chenille, and Leather patches start at 25 pieces. Your recommended patch type will show its correct minimum.

How long does production take?

Your mockup comes back within 24 hours. Once you approve it, standard production runs 10 to 14 business days, and rush options are available on request.
