What Are Custom Woven Patches?
A woven patch is made on a loom rather than stitched on top of a backing fabric. Your artwork is woven directly into the patch with fine threads, so the surface comes out flat and smooth instead of raised and textured.
That finer thread is the whole point. It gives each element more room to stay separate, which is why compact lettering, thin outlines and busy crests come through clearly instead of thickening up. Colors sit side by side with clean separation, and the finished patch is light enough that it sits flat on a cap panel or a shirt chest.
Every woven order starts from your own file. Send a logo, a crest or a rough sketch, and we prepare it for weaving and send back a full-color mockup within 24 hours. Nothing is produced until you approve it.
Woven at a glance
- Fine threads for small text and thin lines
- Flat, smooth, lightweight finish
- Crisp color separation
- Custom shapes and custom sizes
- Sew-on, iron-on / heat seal or hook-and-loop backing
- Minimum order: 25 pieces
When Woven Makes More Sense Than Embroidery
Both constructions are good, they just suit different artwork. The quickest way to decide is to look at your own file and ask how much detail has to survive.
Choose woven when your design has
- Smaller lettering, taglines or est. dates
- Thin lines, outlines or hand-drawn linework
- Detailed logos, crests and seals
- Complex or irregular shapes
- Clarity that matters more than raised texture
Choose embroidery when you want
- The classic stitched surface people can feel
- A bolder, traditional patch presence
- Simpler artwork with room to breathe
- Thick type and heavy shapes that gain from thread texture
If your artwork sits closer to the second column, embroidered patches are the more natural fit. Want the two set side by side? Read how woven and embroidered patches compare, or browse the full custom patches lineup if you are still weighing constructions like molded PVC.
Small Text, Thin Lines and Fine Detail
This is the question we hear most: will the small type actually be readable? With woven construction the threads are finer than standard embroidery thread, so each letter and line has more room to hold its shape rather than filling in.
It still comes down to scale. A tagline that reads fine on a 6 inch back piece has to work much harder on a 2.5 inch chest patch. Rather than guessing, we look at your actual file against the size and placement you want, and we tell you before anything is produced if an element needs to grow or simplify to reproduce cleanly.
Borderline artwork gets a straight answer, not a shrug. You will see exactly how it reads on your mockup, and you can change the size, the placement or the construction before the full order moves forward.
Not sure your detail will hold?
Upload the file and let the Patch Advisor read your artwork's proportions and recommend a patch type and a proportional size. Then we review it by hand before your mockup goes out.

Woven Patch Size and Placement
There is no single correct woven size. It comes from your artwork's proportions, the smallest piece of detail in it, where the patch is going and how much presence you want it to have. A hat front has a narrow usable panel, a hat side is smaller again, a left chest patch reads best when it stays modest, sleeves are narrow, bags sit in the middle and a jacket back can carry a statement piece.
We size to your artwork's own proportions rather than stretching or cropping it, then confirm the final Width by Height with you on your mockup.
Backing Options for Woven Patches
Backing is a separate choice from the patch itself. Pick it based on how the patch gets attached and whether it ever needs to come off.
Sew-on
Permanent and the most secure. Best for jackets, vests and anything washed often.
Iron-on / heat seal
Quick heat-activated attachment for suitable fabrics. Many customers add a few stitches for extra hold.
Hook-and-loop
Removable and swappable, so one patch can move between garments, bags and gear.

What are woven patches best for?
Artwork that carries detail. Fine woven threads hold compact lettering, thin lines and intricate crests without the detail thickening up, so logos with a lot going on stay readable at a normal patch size.
Are woven patches better for small text?
Generally yes. Woven construction uses finer threads than standard embroidery, so smaller type and tight linework reproduce more clearly. There is still a practical limit that depends on how small the text is relative to the overall patch size, and we flag anything that needs to grow before your mockup is approved.
What is the difference between woven and embroidered patches?
Woven patches are made with fine threads and read flat and smooth, which favors detail and small type. Embroidered patches are stitched with thicker thread and read raised and textured, which favors bolder, simpler artwork. Our woven vs embroidered guide compares them side by side.
Do woven patches feel different from embroidered patches?
Yes. A woven patch is smooth and lightweight with very little raised texture. An embroidered patch has the classic stitched surface you can feel. Neither is a lower-quality option, they are simply two different finishes.
Can woven patches be used on hats?
Yes. Woven works well on hat fronts and hat sides because it stays flat and lightweight. The usable panel area on a cap is limited, so we size the patch to your artwork's own proportions and confirm the final Width by Height with you on the mockup.
What backing should I choose?
Sew-on for permanent, wash-heavy use. Iron-on / heat seal for quick heat-activated attachment for suitable fabrics. Hook-and-loop when the patch needs to come off or move between garments and bags. Tell us what the patch is going on and we will recommend one with your mockup.
What size should my woven patch be?
Size follows placement, your artwork's proportions and the smallest element in the design. Hat fronts, left chest, sleeves, bags and jacket backs all have different usable areas. The Patch Advisor recommends a proportional Width by Height from your uploaded artwork, and our size chart shows typical ranges by placement.
Can I see my design before production?
Yes. You get a full-color digital mockup within 24 hours, and nothing is produced until you approve it. There is no payment before your approval.
What is the minimum order?
Embroidered and Printed / Sublimated patches start at 10 pieces. Woven, PVC, Glow-in-the-Dark PVC, Chenille, and Leather patches start at 25 pieces. Your recommended patch type will show its correct minimum.
How long does the process take?
Your mockup comes back within 24 hours. Once you approve it, standard production runs 10 to 14 business days, and rush options are available on request.
