Best materials for gear

PVC

Waterproof, wipe-clean rubber. The most practical material for gear that gets wet, dusty or scuffed.

PVC patches

Embroidered

Thread texture and a solid border. Familiar, durable, and the lowest-cost route into a small run.

Embroidered patches

Woven

Flat weave for callsigns, name strips and fine linework that embroidery would thicken.

Woven patches

Glow PVC

Charges under light and stays visible in the dark. Useful on night-use gear and marker patches.

Hook-and-loop backing

Most tactical gear already carries loop panels, so the patch supplies the hook side. Nothing is sewn or glued to the gear, patches swap in seconds, and a panel can carry a different mark each day. The surcharge is small and per patch, and it is calculated with the rest of your order rather than quoted separately.

Where tactical patches go

Bags and packs

Loop panels on the front and lid of a pack carry a rotating set.

Plate-carrier-style gear

Chest and shoulder loop fields for team or role marks.

Backpacks

Everyday-carry personalization without altering the bag.

Caps

A 2 to 2.5 inch front patch is the usual size on a cap.

Uniforms and workwear

Name strips and role marks, sewn or on hook-and-loop.

Outdoor gear

Weather exposure favors PVC over thread.

These are patches for civilian teams, outdoor groups, training organizations and personal gear. We reproduce artwork you supply and do not produce official service, agency or department insignia.

Readability on gear

  • Two or three strong colors read better at arm's length than a detailed illustration.
  • Keep lettering at least 0.25 inch tall; below that, choose woven over embroidered.
  • A defined border separates the patch from the panel behind it, which is usually dark.
  • Simple silhouettes stay recognizable when the patch is dirty or partly shaded.
  • Contrast matters more than color choice — light on dark or dark on light, not mid-tone on mid-tone.

Weather and wear

PVC is the most weather-tolerant option we make: it does not absorb water, it wipes clean and it holds its shape under repeated removal. Embroidery handles rain and washing well but takes longer to dry and can fade faster in constant sun. Woven sits flattest, which helps under straps and lids. Whichever you pick, a merrowed or heat-cut edge is what stops the patch fraying at the corners over time. Looking for military-style artwork specifically? Tactical patch questions

What material is best for tactical use?

PVC if the gear sees rain, mud or abrasion; embroidered for the traditional look; woven when small text has to stay legible. Glow PVC when night visibility is the point.

Can I get hook-and-loop backing?

Yes, on every construction we make. The hook side is sewn to the patch so it grips the loop panels already on most gear. It carries a small per-patch surcharge.

Can patches be made in PVC?

Yes. PVC is molded to your outline, supports layered depth and takes hook-and-loop the same way embroidery does.

Can I order name patches?

Yes. Send the name list with one template design; each strip is produced to the same size and typeface with different text.

What sizes work best?

Panel and chest marks usually run 2 to 3.5 inches, name strips around 1 by 4 inches. Instant pricing covers up to 4 inches on the longest side; larger sizes are custom quoted.

Can I order a small run?

Every custom patch type starts at 5 pieces: embroidered, woven, printed, chenille, leather, PVC and glow-in-the-dark PVC. Larger quantities simply lower your per-piece price.
