Embroidered vs woven name tapes

Embroidered name patches are the traditional workwear choice. The thread is raised, the colors are rich, and a merrowed border gives a clean finished edge. They suit short first names and bold block or script lettering.

Woven name patches use finer threads woven tightly together. The result is thinner and flatter, so small text, long names and job titles stay crisp. Woven name tapes also sit closer to the fabric, which feels lighter on a summer shirt.

Oval and rectangle name patch sizes

The oval is the classic mechanic-shirt shape, usually a short horizontal oval with the name in script or block letters. The rectangle is cleaner and more modern and leaves room for a second line such as a job title or department.

Size follows the longest name on your list. Keep the patch small enough to sit above the chest pocket without touching the seam, and keep letters large enough to read from a few feet away. The custom patch size chart lists common name-strip sizes, and the size visualizer lets you preview a size on screen.

Backing options

  • Sew-on: the most durable choice for shirts that go through industrial laundry.
  • Iron-on / heat seal: quick to apply with an iron or heat press; sewing the edge afterwards adds security. See how to iron on a patch.
  • Hook-and-loop: one name patch moves between jackets, vests and shirts. See hook-and-loop patches.

Sew-on, iron-on and adhesive backing carry no extra charge; hook-and-loop adds $0.30 per patch.

Bulk names for crews: one design, many names

Most crews want the same shape, border, colors and font on every patch, with only the name changing. Send your name list along with your artwork or a description of the style you want. Check spelling carefully before you send it, including capitalization and nicknames, because the list you approve is the list we produce.

Your mockup shows the shared design, and your quote confirms how the full list is priced before you pay. Many companies pair name patches with a company logo patch on the opposite chest; our custom uniform patches page covers logo patches for staff.

Where name patches go on a work shirt

The most common position is above the left chest pocket, centered on the pocket and about an inch above the pocket seam. Companies that place their logo on the left chest move the name to the right chest so both are level. On shirts without pockets, align the patch with where a pocket would sit.

For full placement measurements across work shirts, jackets and coveralls, see the uniform patch placement guide and the uniform patches for work shirts guide.

Name patch questions

What size is a name patch for a work shirt?

Most name patches are small horizontal ovals or rectangles sized to sit above the chest pocket. The exact size follows the length of the longest name and the style you want; instant pricing covers anything up to 4″ on the longest side.

Embroidered or woven for name patches?

Embroidered gives the classic raised workwear look. Woven is thinner and flatter and holds small or thin lettering more crisply, which helps with long names or job titles.

Can I order patches with different names for my crew?

Yes. Send the name list with your artwork request. Your mockup shows the shared design, and your quote confirms how the name list is priced before you pay.

Which backing should I choose?

Sew-on is the most durable for workwear that is washed often. Iron-on / heat seal is quicker to apply. Hook-and-loop lets one patch move between shirts or jackets and adds $0.30 per patch.

Is the minimum really 5 pieces?

Every custom patch type starts at 5 pieces: embroidered, woven, printed, chenille, leather, PVC and glow-in-the-dark PVC. Larger quantities simply lower your per-piece price.

How does approval work?
