Sew-On Backing

Custom Sew-On Patches

Custom sew-on patches have no adhesive on the back; they are stitched to the garment around the border, which makes them the most durable way to attach a patch. We make sew-on patches in embroidered, woven, chenille, leather, printed and PVC construction from 5 pieces, with no extra backing charge and a free digital mockup before you pay.

Why is sew-on the most durable patch backing?

An iron-on patch relies on adhesive, and adhesive softens with heat and wears with repeated flexing. A sew-on patch is held by thread passing through both the patch and the fabric, so hot washing, dryer heat and daily wear don't weaken the bond. If a stitch ever breaks, a few new stitches repair it in minutes.

That is why sew-on is the standard for uniforms, workwear, motorcycle vests and anything that has to look right for years. It also works on every fabric, including the ones heat can damage.

Where sew-on patches work best

  • Uniforms and workwear: shirts that go through hot or industrial laundry keep their patches. See custom uniform patches and name patches.
  • Jackets: large back patches carry weight and see stress at the edges, so stitching keeps corners flat. See custom jacket patches.
  • Bags and backpacks: canvas and nylon packs get dragged, stuffed and rained on; thread outlasts glue.
  • Leather: heat damages leather, so sewing is the dependable method for vests and jackets. See custom biker patches.
  • Nylon and waterproof shells: fabrics that can't take iron heat still take thread.

Merrowed vs cut borders for stitching

A merrowed border is a thick, rounded overlock edge wrapped around the patch. It gives you a raised channel to sew through, hides your stitches well and suits round, oval, square and simple shield shapes. It is the traditional choice for sew-on patches.

A hot-cut or laser-cut border follows the exact outline of your design, so it handles detailed custom shapes and sharp points. Sew just inside the edge with a matching thread color so the stitches disappear into the design.

Leather patches are usually stitched through the leather a few millimeters from the edge, and PVC patches are often molded with a flat sewing channel around the border.

Hand sewing vs machine sewing

By machine: use a straight stitch or a narrow zigzag, a denim or heavy needle, and polyester thread. Pin or baste the patch first so it doesn't creep. Machines are best for flat areas: shirt chests, jacket backs and tote bags.

By hand: use a whip stitch over a merrowed edge or a small running stitch just inside a cut edge, with doubled thread and a thimble on thick fabric. Hand sewing gets into sleeves, hats, backpack pockets and curved areas. Our how to sew on a patch guide walks through both methods step by step.

Which patch type should you sew on?

Embroidered is the all-round sew-on patch with raised thread texture. Woven is thinner and best for small text. Leather gives a premium look on jackets and bags. PVC is waterproof for outdoor gear, and chenille letters are traditionally sewn onto letterman jackets.

Sew-on patch questions

Are sew-on patches more durable than iron-on?

Yes. Thread holds the patch mechanically, so heat, hot washing and flexing don't weaken it the way they can weaken adhesive. A sewn patch usually lasts as long as the garment.

Can sew-on patches go on leather?

Yes, sew-on is the right choice for leather vests and jackets. Use a leather needle and heavy thread, or have a leather or tailoring shop stitch it with a heavy-duty machine.

Should I sew by hand or by machine?

A machine is faster and gives an even stitch on flat areas like jacket backs and shirt chests. Hand sewing is easier on sleeves, bags, hats and curved or thick areas a machine can't reach.

Does sew-on backing cost extra?

No. Sew-on, iron-on / heat seal and adhesive backings are included in the price. Only hook-and-loop adds a per-patch charge.

What is the minimum order?

Every custom patch type starts at 5 pieces: embroidered, woven, printed, chenille, leather, PVC and glow-in-the-dark PVC. Larger quantities simply lower your per-piece price.

Do I approve the patch first?

You review and approve your free digital mockup before paying. After payment, we make a real sample and send you a photo of it to approve before the full production run begins.
