Back, chest or sleeve: where should a jacket patch go?

Back patches are the statement piece: club colors, brand artwork, band logos and crew names. They are centered between the shoulder seams, usually starting a few inches below the collar. Motorcycle clubs often split the back into a center patch with top and bottom rockers; see motorcycle club patches.

Chest patches are small: a logo, a name or an initial on the left or right chest. Sleeve patches go on the upper arm just below the shoulder seam and suit flags, years, numbers and secondary logos. Many jackets combine all three. Our patch size for jackets guide gives measured ranges for each spot.

How big can a jacket back patch be?

A back patch is sized to the jacket, not to a fixed number. Measure the width between the shoulder seams and leave a margin on each side so the patch doesn't wrap onto the sides as the wearer moves. Larger jacket sizes take larger patches, so if your group wears a range of sizes, choose one patch size that looks right on the smallest jacket.

Pricing shown covers designs up to 4″ on the longest side. Over 4″? We’ll email your custom price within 6 to 10 hours.

Chest and sleeve patches usually fall inside the standard size range and are priced instantly. Use the actual-size visualizer to see a size on screen before you order.

Which patch and backing suit each jacket fabric?

JacketPatch typesBacking

Bomber (nylon)Embroidered, woven, PVCSew-on or hook-and-loop
Varsity / lettermanChenille, embroideredSew-on
Canvas / work jacketEmbroidered, woven, leatherSew-on or iron-on

Heat and nylon don't mix, so bomber shells take sewn or hook-and-loop patches. Leather should always be stitched. Denim and canvas take iron-on patches well, but a big back patch is worth stitching too. See sew-on patches for stitching tips.

Denim and biker jackets

Denim vests and jackets are the classic patch canvas, from a single back piece to a sleeve full of small patches. Embroidered patches with a merrowed border give the traditional look, while leather patches suit workwear-inspired brands. Riders building out a vest or cut should see custom biker patches for rockers, name tabs and center patches made to match.

Varsity and letterman jackets

Varsity jackets traditionally carry a large chenille letter on the left chest, with embroidered or chenille patches for sports, years and achievements on the sleeves. Chenille's raised, looped yarn is what gives the jacket its classic look, and the felt base is stitched to the wool body.

Jacket patches vs patches for clothing

Jackets are heavier and see more wear than shirts and hoodies, so they suit larger patches, sturdier borders and sewn backing. For t-shirts, hoodies, hats and everyday apparel see custom patches for clothing.

Jacket patch questions

What size should a jacket back patch be?

Back patches are usually the largest patch on a jacket, sized to the width between the shoulder seams. Anything over 4″ on the longest side gets a custom price; send your design and the jacket size and we'll quote it.

Which backing is best for a leather jacket?

Sew-on. Iron heat can damage leather and adhesive grips it poorly, so leather jackets and vests should have patches stitched on.

Can I iron a patch onto a denim jacket?

Yes. Denim takes heat-seal backing well. For a large back patch, stitch around the edge as well, because a jacket back flexes a lot.

What patch type looks best on a jacket?

Embroidered is the classic choice for denim and biker jackets, chenille for varsity jackets, leather for a premium look, and woven for detailed small chest or sleeve patches.

What is the minimum order?

Every custom patch type starts at 5 pieces: embroidered, woven, printed, chenille, leather, PVC and glow-in-the-dark PVC. Larger quantities simply lower your per-piece price.

Will I see a mockup first?

You review and approve your free digital mockup before paying. After payment, we make a real sample and send you a photo of it to approve before the full production run begins.
