How to Sew On a Patch: Step-by-Step Guide

Sewing is the most durable way to attach a patch. It takes longer than ironing it on, but it holds up to washing, wear and heat-sensitive fabric that iron-on backing can't touch.
What you'll need
- The patch
- A needle sized for the fabric (heavier needle for denim, leather or canvas)
- Polyester or heavy-duty thread in a matching or contrasting color
- Straight pins or fabric glue stick (to hold the patch in place while sewing)
- Scissors and a thimble (hand sewing) or a sewing machine with a walking foot (thicker fabric)
A sew-on patch made with a merrowed border already has a clean folded edge to stitch through, which makes hand sewing easier than sewing through raw fabric edges.
Step-by-step
1. Decide on placement first
Lay the garment flat and position the patch exactly where you want it before threading a needle. Pin or glue-stick it in place so it can't shift. Check both sides and any seams or pockets underneath before you commit.
2. Thread the needle and knot the thread
Use a length you can comfortably work with, roughly 18 to 24 inches, doubled over for extra strength on heavier fabric. Tie a secure knot at the end.
3. Start from the underside of the fabric
Push the needle up through the fabric from behind, right at the edge of the patch, so the knot stays hidden underneath.
4. Stitch around the perimeter
Use a whipstitch or a small running stitch close to the patch edge, going in and out along the border. Keep stitches small and evenly spaced, roughly 1/8 inch apart, for a clean and durable finish. Work all the way around, including inside corners on shaped patches.
5. Reinforce corners and curves
Sharp corners and tight curves take more stress than straight edges. Add a couple of extra stitches at these points so the patch doesn't lift with wear and washing.
6. Finish and knot off
When you reach your starting point, push the needle through to the underside, tie a secure double knot, and trim the excess thread close to the knot.
7. Check both sides
Flip the garment over and check that the underside is neat, with no loose loops that could snag or unravel, then check the front for any gaps in the stitching.
Hand sewing vs machine sewing
Hand sewing gives you the most control, especially around curves, corners and thicker fabric like jacket lapels or bag straps. It's the safer choice for a first patch or an oddly shaped design.
A sewing machine is faster for multiple patches on flat garments like jackets and vests, especially with a walking foot that feeds heavier fabric evenly. Chenille and leather patches, which sit thicker off the fabric, are usually easier to sew by hand or with a heavy-duty machine setup.
Sew-on vs iron-on: which backing to choose
Sew-on backing is the most durable option and the one to pick for anything washed often, worn hard, or made from a fabric that can't safely take heat, like leather or some technical fabrics. Iron-on backing is faster to apply but relies on adhesive that can weaken over time with repeated washing.
