Chenille vs Embroidered Patches: Which to Pick
By 6Six Needles Team · Published August 24, 2026
Short answer: pick chenille for big, bold varsity-style letters on heavier fabric, and pick embroidered when your design has moderate detail or needs to sit on lighter garments.
Which one should you order?
Choose chenille
- Your design is a bold letter, number or mascot shape.
- It's going on a letterman jacket, hoodie or heavier fabric.
- You want the classic collegiate, hand-crafted feel.
Choose embroidered
- Your logo has readable small text or moderate detail.
- The patch is going on caps, uniforms or lighter apparel.
- You want a lower minimum order, starting at 10 pieces.

Chenille and embroidered patches are both stitched, but they're built for different jobs. Chenille uses thick, fuzzy yarn tufted onto a base fabric, usually finished with an embroidered merrowed outline. Embroidered patches use fine to medium thread stitched directly into the design, so the detail level and thickness are noticeably different side by side.
That difference in thread thickness decides which letter sizes, which garments and which minimum order quantity make sense for your project.
Chenille vs embroidered at a glance
| Factor | Chenille | Embroidered |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Fuzzy chenille yarn tufted onto a felt-style base, usually with an embroidered outline | Thread stitched directly into a fabric backing |
| Surface | Thick, plush and raised, almost a texture you can grip | Raised but flatter, defined stitch lines |
| Best letter size | Large block letters, numbers and mascots | Small to medium logos and lettering |
| Fine detail | Loses hairlines and small text; built for bold shapes | Holds moderate detail and standard text |
| Garment weight | Best on heavier fabric: wool, twill, leather sleeves | Works on light to heavy fabric |
| Typical look | Varsity, letterman, collegiate | Classic patch look, broadly versatile |
| Minimum order | From 25 pieces | From 10 pieces |

Chenille patches: plush texture, big letters
Best-fit designs
Chenille is built for large, simple shapes: a single letter, a number, a mascot outline. The yarn is too thick to hold small text or fine linework, so complex logos should go elsewhere.
Where it goes
Letterman and varsity jackets, greek organization apparel, heavier hoodies and collegiate wear are the classic placements. The plush texture is part of the look, not a side effect.
Minimum and sizing
Chenille patches start at 25 pieces. Because the yarn adds thickness, chenille tends to run larger than an embroidered patch with the same design footprint.
Embroidered patches: moderate detail, broad use
Best-fit designs
Embroidered thread is thinner than chenille yarn, so it holds crests, standard lettering and moderately detailed logos that chenille would blur out.
Where it goes
Caps, uniforms, workwear, motorcycle clubs and apparel of almost any weight. It's the more versatile of the two, and the lower 10-piece minimum makes it friendlier for small runs.
Need finer detail still?
If your artwork has small lettering or intricate linework that even embroidery can't hold, compare it with woven vs embroidered patches.

Backing and sizing
Both patch types are available with sew-on or iron-on backing. Because chenille sits thicker off the fabric, sew-on is generally the more secure long-term attachment, especially on jackets that get regular wear.
If the patch is going on a letterman or varsity-style jacket, check patch size and placement for jackets before you finalize dimensions, or use the actual-size visualizer to see your design at true scale.
